I remember learning about Hello Kitty’s true nature in the mid-2010s. I immediately, conveniently tossed it out of my head. It simply hurt my brain too much to process that Hello Kitty was not a kitty. She is a little girl. Hello Kitty.

On July 18, 2024, IMDb posted the 10 series of 2024 with the highest average viewer rating on their platform. IMDb is, by virtue of the name itself (“internet movie database”), a tool covering all media—and therefore one you would expect to reflect mainstream tastes.

So you’d expect the top-rated series to be something like Shōgun, which got nominated for a recording-breaking number of Emmys. Or maybe a show like The Bear or House of the Dragon, which get tons of coverage in mainstream entertainment outlets. But the top-rated show of 2024 (so far) on IMDb is none of those.

Things are regularly taken out of context on the internet. (For better or worse, but usually worse.) Sometimes, though, a panel from a manga or a screenshot from a series is so stunning, that you can’t help but take it out of context. That’s the case with the now-famous “astronaut panel” from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man.

The panel features a receding line of astronauts chopped in half. Their arms appear to be in prayer, their heads slightly bowed. Their upper and lower halves are spaced apart, with the legs sticking straight up out of the grassy field. The space in between creates a path that leads back to a truly horrifying and formidable-looking devil, half-obscured by the darkness.

Few within the manga and anime industry would dispute the claim that Ranma 1/2 is one of the most influential series of all time. Makoto Shinkai said it was a key influence for his modern classic Your Name, for instance, though it’s not just influential within Japan—Bryan Lee O’Malley cited Ranma 1/2 as a key inspiration for Scott Pilgrim, too.

Long story short, Ranma 1/2 is both beloved and culturally important.

Elden Ring is rather famous for being obtuse with its story. You can beat the game and become the new Elden Lord without really understanding why you’re doing it and what really happened to lead your character up to this point. All you know is you like the lady with the cool hat.

Honestly, that’s most players’ experience, unless you’ve watched hours of lore videos on YouTube. Elden Ring‘s story is provided via item descriptions, environmental clues, and, yes, the occasional conversation with NPCs. It’s easy to miss, and even easier to not cohesively piece together. Hence the god-tier work of the YouTube lore videos.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead was one of my favorite anime series of 2023. It’s a unique series that speaks to widespread feelings of work burnout while also being one of the funniest, most colorful, and joyful takes on the zombie apocalypse in existence. BUG FILMS delivered us some gorgeous animation, too.

It feels dishonest to talk about Zom 100 without conceding it has some cringe moments (there were certain camera angles on certain flight attendants that were not necessary). But I’d still argue that Akira—in his quest to escape out from under the thumb of a toxic work environment, in his self-inflicted pressures of feeling he needs to give back to his parents somehow—represents one of the more empathetic adult heroes in modern anime. We so rarely get protagonists in their 20s and 30s, anyway.

I say “almost” all accounts because, in the early days of its release, some outlets listed the DLC’s reception as “mixed” because the conversation around Shadow of the Erdtree became dominated by players saying the game was too hard.

When I last went to Anime Expo in 2022, the first in-person iteration since the COVID-19 pandemic, I wrote about noticing the darker side of the fandom more at the convention. If that was one of my takeaways in 2022, my takeaway in 2024 was the opposite.

This year at Anime Expo, I noticed countless acts of kindness and generosity. Granted, as shounen mainstay My Hero Academia has vividly illustrated, anger and toxicity makes for clickable headlines, posts, and videos. A post espousing that “people are nice, actually” is generally considered less desirable by the media machine as a whole, which is quite dark—and all the more reason that the countless small acts of kindness I saw at Anime Expo 2024 should be celebrated.

Back in 2023, Studio Orange gave us Trigun Stampede, an alternate view of one of the all-time classic anime series. Stampede was a reboot in a sense, but also not a retelling. Instead of giving us the ’90s anime again, but animated in CGI this time, Orange set up a prequel of sorts.

By the final episode of Stampede, the next season of the Trigun reboot was gearing up to be closer to the 1998 Trigun. Vash is in hiding with his old haircut back, Meryl is back to being a girl boss, Robert De Niro is mercifully nowhere to be seen. In fact, at the Trigun panel at Anime Expo 2024, Orange’s team promise that the next installment of the series will be closer to the manga.

Sh*t is going down. The days of cute high school culture festivals seem like a distant memory. In recent arcs, My Hero has proved there’s a darker side to its initially bubbly exterior. It’s not beyond killing or maiming characters, which makes everything feel tense as hell.

The teaser depicts a stage, bleak and grimy, captured by a grainy camera. Suddenly, you hear static, and a piano plinks as a person with a trenchcoat and a smiling paper bag mask suddenly appears center-stage. The image is interrupted by several very quick close-ups before he disappears and you see three Japanese characters in the middle of the screen. For decades and decades, Shonen Jump has been known for producing some of the biggest action series in the manga world. One Piece, Naruto, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia—all of them serialized (or are serializing) in Jump.

But despite the fact that the shonen genre translates to “young boy does action stuff to be the best at something,” there are some Jump series that are being more liberal with those confines. One of them is Akane Banashi, which features a female protagonist (GASP!) trying to make it to the top of the world of rakugo, a form of storytelling from Japan’s Edo period. Another is Blue Box, a sports-centric romantic comedy (GASP!!) which is about to get an anime adaptation.
